CAMBRIDGE MULTI-FAMILY

CAMBRIDGE, MA | UNDER CONSTRUCTION | RESIDENTIAL

In light of the removal of single family zoning throughout Cambridge, this projects seeks to double the housing density of an existing lot, and imagine scalable, replicable, typologies. An existing typical deep lot, housing half of a detached duplex, receives a third half (which suggests a fourth, if the strategy is replicated on the other half of the detached duplex). Our addition occupies the back of the deep lot, which we see as a desirable condition. Centered upon an entry forecourt, the plan tilts to orient towards light and views. In this context, the viability of planimetric moves are measured in inches. A fireplace and its wood storage niche, exempted from site offsets, become expressive volumes, while programs tilt as needed for light or privacy. In this project, we found a joy in the sculptural expression and calibration of domestic programs against new densities.
